This Standard was prepared by the Joint Standards Australia/Standards New Zealand Committee EL/15 on Quality and Performance of Household Electrical Appliances to supersede, in part, AS 2442-1981, Performance of household electrical appliances-Rotary clothes dryers.
The 1981 edition of AS 2442 has been enlarged and divided to form a series which currently comprises two parts as follows:
AS/NZS
2442 Performance of household electrical appliances-Rotary clothes dryers
2442.1 Part 1: Energy consumption and performance (this Standard)
2442.2 Part 2: Energy labelling requirements
The overall objective of this series of Standards is to promote high levels of quality, performance and energy efficiency in rotary clothes dryers.
The Parts in this series are defined as follows:
(a) Part 1 Includes performance test procedures and minimum performance criteria for rotary clothes dryers. It has been structured to be suitable for reference in regulatory legislation and to be used in conjunction with Part 2. All of the basic subject matter in this document was addressed in the 1981 edition of AS 2442.
(b) Part 2 Includes algorithms for the calculation of the energy efficiency star rating and projected energy usage, performance requirements, details of the energy label and requirements for the valid application thereof. All the subject matter in this document is new to the Standard and was not addressed in the 1981 edition of AS 2442.
It is published with the approval of the combined state regulatory authorities and is structured to be suitable for reference in energy labelling regulatory legislation. It refers to Part 1 for test procedures.
The changes to the previous edition relevant to this Standard include the following:
(i) The format of information, including the order of the appendices, has been significantly revised to allow easier reference and access.
(ii) The conditions for measurement and recording results have been further specified. This additional specification includes additional appendices and an updating of technology and tolerances.
(iii) The initial moisture content of the test load has been altered from 100% to 90% (Appendix E).
(iv) The required final moisture content has been altered from 8% to 6% (Clause 4.2).
(v) The test methods to determine moisture content have been significantly revised to make platform scales mandatory in most cases.
(vi) Test methods have generally been made more repeatable and reproducible so as to be suitable for use as part of a compulsory energy labelling scheme.
(vii) The scope of the Standard now specifically includes condenser dryers and the dryer function of combination washer/dryers.
(viii) The test to determine the maximum external temperature of the dryer has been deleted. This aspect is now dealt with in the relevant safety and approvals Standard.
