All digital television set top boxes that are used to watch standard definition and high definition television broadcasts on both free-to-air and subscription cable and satellite digital platforms are covered by Minimum Energy Performance Standards (MEPS).
Set top boxes that are integrated into another appliance or product (such as a television), are designed to connect to the internet, and those that have a hard disk drive for recording, are excluded.
Video recorders receive free-to-air digital television broadcasts and are able to record these broadcasts. Video recorders may also include a Blu-ray or Digital Video Disk (DVD) player. A product profile on video recorders and set top boxes was completed in 2013.
