Overview

Liquid-chilling packages (known as chillers) provide industrial and commercial sectors with climate control.

Chillers transfer heat away from a space that requires climate control, much like a traditional split system or package unit does, but they use water (or a water solution) to do so instead of air.

Legislation

In Australia, this product is regulated under the Greenhouse and Energy Minimum Standards Act 2012. 

In New Zealand, the relevant legislation is the Energy Efficiency (Energy Using Products) Regulations 2002. Visit the Energy Efficiency and Conservation Authority website for more information.  

What products are covered?

Products covered by this Determination include air-cooled and water-cooled liquid-chilling packages with a cooling capacity of 350 kW or above.

The Determination only covers factory-made and prefabricated assemblies (not necessarily shipped as one package) with one or more compressors, condensers and evaporators, with interconnections and accessories, designed for the purpose of cooling water. These products must be machines specifically designed to make use of a vapour compression refrigeration cycle to remove heat from water and reject the heat to a cooling medium, usually air or water.

What products are not covered?

The following products are not covered by this Determination.

  • Liquid-chilling packages driven other than by an electric motor.
  • Air-cooled liquid-chilling packages with centrifugal fans.
  • Liquid-chilling packages with remote condensers.
  • Liquid-chilling packages for fluids other than water.
  • Free cooling liquid-chilling packages (air cooled).
  • Free cooling liquid-chilling packages (water cooled).
  • Heat pump (reverse cycle) liquid-chilling packages.
  • Heat recovery liquid-chilling packages.

Standards 

The following standards are referenced in this Determination and are available for purchase from Standards Australia.   

  • AS/NZS 4776.1.1:2008 Liquid-chilling packages using the vapour compression cycle - Part 1.1: Method of rating and testing for performance-rating.
  • AS/NZS 4776.1.2:2008 Liquid-chilling packages using the vapour compression cycle. Part 1.2: Method of rating and testing for performance-testing.
  • AS/NZS 4776.2:2008 Liquid-chilling packages using the vapour compression cycle. Part 2: Minimum energy performance standard (MEPS) and compliance requirements.

The version of the standards that apply are the versions that existed on 26 October 2012, when the Determination came into force.  

Minimum Energy Performance Standards   

The Minimum Energy Performance Standards for this product are specified in section 5 of AS/NZS 4776.2:2008.

Testing your product  

Chillers must be tested in accordance with section 5 of AS/NZS 4776.1.1:2008 and sections 5 to 10 of AS/NZS 4776.1.2:2008.

Labelling requirements

There are no labelling requirements for chillers.
