Changes to requirements for testing washing machines in Australia

A new declaration under the Greenhouse and Energy Minimum Standards Act 2012 (Act) allows sodium percarbonate to be used as an alternative to sodium perborate tetrahydrate in detergent when testing washing machines.

The declaration provides an alternative to demonstrate compliance with the Greenhouse and Energy Minimum Standards (Clothes Washing Machines) Determination 2015.

The declaration is a first for the GEMS Regulator who permitted this in line with recent amendments to the legislation.

The GEMS Regulator was satisfied that the change promoted the objectives of the Act.

A declaration (by legislative instrument) under section 27A of the Act was made on 5 November 2024.

See Product deemed compliance for more information about this change and future declarations.
